We're indebted to the American Alpine Club for this snippet - Swiss airline, erm, Swiss has is going to name all its aircraft after the country's highest peaks to celebrate the International Year of Mountains.

I'm Eiger, Fly Me... Gratuitous pic of plane with mountains.

To qualify for the long haul fleet, the peak has to be over 4,000 metres in height, while for local services, you can get away with merely being the highest top in a particular canton.

The first new Airbus A340-300s, due to arrive in summer 2003, will be given the name "Matterhorn". Other planes will land snappy monikers like 'Dufourspitze', 'Liskamm', 'Weisshorn' and our fave, 'Parrotspitze'.

And just in case you were wondering, the name 'Eiger' goes to Airbus A 321, aircraft number HB-IOA - ideal reading matter, The White Spider by Heinirick Harrer.

Sad plane spotters can find the entire list here.

Surely only a matter of time before British Airways follows suit with a host of incomprehensible Scottish peak names taking pride of place,
