It's an orgy of mountain radio programmes on Radio 4 today with no less than three programmes. And if you're stuck in the office, hmm, well... Never mind.

Radio 4 is on 92.4-94.6 FM.

The White Spider - 9.45 am / 00.30 am

Ooops, a bit late with this one, but this week's Radio 4 Book of the Week is the Heinrich Harrer' classic 'The White Spider'.

The book is an account of the early attempts to scale the legendary North Face of the Eiger and extracts are being read daily on Radio 4 at 9.45 am with a repeat at half past midnight.

A High Place - 11.00 am Tuesday

Not only, but also... At 11 a.m on Tuesday - that's today - on Radio 4, you can listen to the first of a two-part exploration of the world's holy mountains with poet Michael Simmons Roberts starting with Mount Olympus.

Afternoon Play - Ice Mountain - 2.15 pm Tuesday

Radio 4 at 2.15 this afternoon - Tuesday - play about woman attempting to become first lass to climb K2.

Although I'm partial to an Afternoon Play or two I didn't get the chance to listen to Ice Mountain or any of the others. Were they any good?

The White Spider is brilliant - one of the best mountaineering books ever written, along with Hermann Buhl's Nanga Parbat Pilgrimage - the radio broadcast really brings it to life - absolutely riveting accounts of the early attempts on the north face of the Eiger culminating in the successful attempt by the team including Heinrich Harrer, who later wrote Seven Years in Tibet. If you've missed it so far, listen tonight at 12.30 am.
