Snowdonia 4x4 Damage Meeting Tonight

Illegal 4x4s and trail bikes are causing permanent damage in North Wales.

Concern over damage caused by the illegal off-road use of motorbikes and 4x4s in many parts of North Wales has led to a public meeting to discuss the issue tonight, Thursday 5 July.

Areas where there's concern include the Moelwynion, Carneddau, and Berwyn mountain ranges and, says the Snowdonia Society, the ruts caused by the vehicles do not recover naturally and successive rainfall exacerbates the erosion by washing away peat and soil leaving permanent damage which can't be repaired without massive investment.

This picture shows the sort of ruts they're talking about:

The meeting takes place at Blaenau Ffestiniog's Community Centre, at 7.30 pm on Thursday, 5th July 2007 and representatives from County and Community councils, Mountaineering Clubs and Centres, Local Access Forums, the Forestry Commission, farmers unions, the Wales Off-road Motorcycle Steering Group, the Campaign for the Protection of Rural Wales, the Snowdonia Society, many user groups including the Ramblers Association.

The meeting will be run by the newly-formed North Wales Alliance to Manange Off-Roading, and will provide an opportunity for membership of the Alliance's Steering Group.

Everyone is welcome to attend and admission to the meeting is free.
