Our regular Friday round-up of what's
in store for the weekend. Just check the links for the relevant
weather forecasts and if you want to know how things look in a
particular area right now, check out the OM
web cams page for a selection of hill
cams. And whatever you do, have a good one.

Metcheck
for good overviews of localised areas based on a number
of meteorological models. Loads of quirky options for stuff
like rain forecasts plus offbeat, leftfield weather
generalisations. Get stuck in and have a browse, there's a
lot on this site.
They say: 'Friday will turn
somewhat milder across the South as a fragmenting band of
sleet and snow remains stationary across Northern England.
Into the weekend yet more snow, this time from the Midlands
Northwards really before things become generally a touch
milder throughout England and Wales to end the
weekend...'
Snow :-)
You can check out individual areas or dig
a bit deeper for the Mountain
Forecast page or
the Climbing
Forecast page. The
Seven-Day
Charts give a handy
overview too.

Mountain
Weather Information
Service has great
downloadable mountain-specific forecasts for NW, W and SE
Highlands, Cairngorms, Southern Uplands, Peak District and
Lakes in PDF format. Plus a Snowdonia forecast. The Peak and
Snowdonia forecasts are now restricted to weekend forecasts
and go out on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Best mountain
weather forecast we know of.
They say: Buffety cold weekend. Winds
gusting up to 60mph, particularly in Scotland will make
walking difficult on high ground in some areas. There will
also be a mix of snow on both days turning to rain later on
Sunday. Temperatures on the tops will be between -1 and -4C
depending on where you are, but the high winds will create
serious windchill making it feel much colder than it
actually is on the thermometer. High areas generally
icy.
Check individual forecasts for
specifics.
Check individual forecasts for specific
details. Arguably the best mountain-specific forecast out
there by a way.

BBC
Weather Site uses Met
Office data, but more user friendly. Just been revamped for
the summer, weird stuff but easy access to a lot more
information including rain forecasts, cloud, wind,
temperature, visibility etc. Nice. Localised forecasts
accessible from the same page.
If you want video, check out the BBC
WEATHER
PLAYER with a
selection of forecasts. They say a cloudy start on Saturday,
brightening later on. Plus lots of grey skies on
Sunday.
Saturday 'Unsettled across the UK,
with showers or rain for most places. Snow is also likely at
times across Scotland, northern England and north Wales,
especially on high ground.'
Sunday 'Continuing unsettled with
further spells of rain or showers in most places. Any snow
generally becoming confined to Scotland, significant
accumulations are likely in the east.'
BBC specific areas:

William / Kendal

Scottish
Avalanche Information Service
- Daily avalanche forecasts are back.
Seems to be a mix of old snow and ice
with some new snow on top and some iceing building up.
Forecast for today Friday ranges from 'low' for Meagaidh to
'considerable' in the Gorms. With snow expected over the
weekend, things can change so check the latest forecast
available before hitting the hill and plan
accordingly.

OUTDOORSmagic
web cam page Links to all the UK
mountain web cams we're aware of. If there's one that we've
missed, please drop
us a line and we'll add it to the
page. Good for getting a general idea of what the snow
situation's like, if the sun is shining, whether there's
anywhere to park in Coniston etc. Check the image you're
viewing is up to date as they often seem to go down.
Recently overhauled so most cameras featured are actually
working :-)

Snow, coldness, proper winter.
Windy with patchy visibility.
Verdict Looking suspiciously like winter is
back. Combination of snow over most northern mountain and hill areas
and winds possibly gusting up to 60mph will make things a tad gnarly
so shell and insulation clothing a must. Don't forget to pack hats
and gloves. It's going to be sub-zero up top as well and the wind
chill will make things feel much cooler, like -18C in some Scottish
hills for example. Forecasters are a little vague on when, where and
how much snow is likely, but the eastern highlands seem the best bet
for a significant fall, though things will get milder later on Sunday
with snow turning to rain.
Should be epic. Have a good one :-)
Obvious Disclaimer Hey come on, we all know
mountain weather's unpredictable, and while the above forecasts and
links are a guide to what the weather may do, remember that mountain
areas also tend to generate their own conditions, temperatures are
much cooler up top than in the valleys and conditions can be totally
different from down in the valleys.
