"My worries are about how stable it will be. We do have a tendancy to experience rather, erm, interesting weather when camping!!!!" ..... Rob

Rob, if your 350 is like mine you'll notice that at the poles there are temporary webbing diagonal braces for when the going gets tough. These make the hooped poles very rigid. Brilliant idea. Not had to use them yet though.

Thanks GWIW. I've got Memory Map, but I don't want to record my tracks or anything like that, just find out where I am occasionally. Is it possible to turn off the GPS on these devices (any of them) in order to save battery? (Likewise, is it possible to turn the phone off and still use it as a PDA to save battery?)

Email and some web access every few days is what would really be useful.

Writing stuff and a to-do list would be handy.

Has anybody got any advice/experience on these devices featured in an emailI just got from Expansys:

Toshiba Portege G710

Toshiba Portege G910

MWg Zinc II

Being a long term Psion user I like the look of the G910, but I had looked at this a few weeks ago and the reviews wern't good. I'm not sure my stubby fingers/thumbs could cope with the G710. Never heard of MWg Zinc.

I like the idea of these devices but haven't relaly been following developments for years. I don't need one desperately but wouldn't mind spending under £200 on one. I do like a keyboard. Is it possible to swap batteries on a trip (I've got 4 camera batts and 4 phone batts).

Comments welcome.

John

Anybody (besides Chris ) remember the Ultimate U8? I bought mine in '75 I think from a Field & Trek price list (multi coloured photocopying - no pictures). It was basically a single skin, bright blue and orange nylon rectangular sack. Cost £18. You propped up the open end with a couple of poles, crawled in, tied the open end up behind you somehow, and watched the condensation form. I loved it. I gave it to a friend twenty years later for a trip round Ireland. He's still got it I think.

I think it would have been '77 or '78 that I went to Alpine Sports in Holborn to get the newly released Tramp. Unfortunatley they didn't have any in stock yet, but they did have a Robert Saunders GC2 which cost the outrageous (for me) price of £50. Worked out at £2/year in the end.
