Cant believe that no one has mentioned ViewRanger for the iPhone. A very competent GPS mapping app. The only issue, as mentioned is battery life. If you're walking for much more than 8 hours then its not good. However, as a back up it is great.
I use it as my primary nav tool for many short day walks as it is very quick and simple. It's about £15 I think, but that gives you the app and £15 of credit to spend on maps.
I was toying with this myself, I admire Alpkit for their brutal honesty. You have to wonder, how many companies have made tents that are worse than this one, sold it (without saying its bad) and only suffered from a few moaning reviews. As many people tend to adapt and improve their tents then surely this is a good bit of kit to play with. Also, they are selling a bunch of Hunka bivvy's without DWR coating, for a fiver!
I always use the campsite just on the edge of Capel Curig, I don't know the name of it (something welsh) but it is just before Capel Curig on the A5 from Betws-Y-Coed. Pretty basic, showers and toilets in a block and thats your lot. A nice river running through, £5 per night, and only 10 minutes walk from the Tyn-Y-Coed pub.
I have taken up biking again this year and have really got into it. I got a Giro helmet from halfords for about £40 I think. It fits great, is nice and light and no one gives me funny looks at the trail centres. They have cheaper ones too, so you can get a decent lid without it costing the earth.
Take the ridge, I've done this route with a friend who is petrified as soon as he steps up a curb, and he got up there with only a little encouragement. The ridge itself is pretty wide and you can avoid going near any edges. It just looks a little daunting before you start.
Either way, tis a great mountain and you'll have a brilliant time.
Talkback: Mammut Moves Into Brewing... Awesome news, especially because I am getting married next year, at the farm which is home to the Wincle Brewing Company.
