I'm a bit late catching up with this thread. Kate's comment about the benefits of glucosamine concern me a little. I'd been taking the stuff for the best part of 6 or 7 years, with the half-hearted support of my GP - well, it might help - and then with the enthusiastic support of my physio. Recently, my GP having satisfied himself, and me, that I hadn't got bowel cancer, we started looking for causes of my bowel problems. We quickly discovered that long term use of glucosamine may have a side-effect on the bowels, and anyway, there have been recent large-scale studies ('respectable' was the word my GP used to describe them) which suggested quite strongly that Glucosamine has little or no effect on the joints. The surgery doesn't prescribe it. I stopped taking it back in November and things are returning to normal. But you didn't want to know that...
Another Cornish Saturday morning. Down the village for a paper and a quick 11km along the cliffs, with the bonus of 350m. of ascent, just to remind heart, legs and lungs I still love them. Up on the cliffs the sun breaks through. Stunning. That amazing winter light, clear and sharp. The returning fulmars are arguing over the best roosting and nest sites on the cliffs, and there are a couple of gannets diving for fish. From St.Agnes Head the sea is turquoise and the views amazing, all the way across to St Ives. The tide's in. The surf is big, very big. As it breaks, the sharp easterly breeze whips the spray back off the crest and it catches the sunlight, whiter than white. Then it all smashes against the cliffs, throwing spray up 40 or 50 metres. God, I wish I was in the Cairngorms...
So much common sense.... Thanks Jon, that is really helpful: some of us need to have the obvious stated, and your buying tips would have spared me the mistake I made with my last pair!
Hi guys - what a wonderful forum this is: there goes another childhood hang-up - guys, guys, guys.
I think you've summed it up perfectly Skip. Whenever I find myself coming on all superior about English grammar, spelling, syntax, vocabulary and all the other crap, I now try to remember to tell myself that the other guy, whom I understand perfectly, probably walks up mountains faster than I can, and has 187 skills that I can only dream about. Life's too short...
Way back in my teaching days, I kept the manufacturers of red biros in business in my efforts to enforce the purity of our great language. Sadly it wasn't until long after I had put all that behind me, and while enjoying my gold-plated teacher's pension sitting on the top of some Welsh peak or other, I had my vision of truth - it's all a load of dogs' danglers. There is only one question: do I understand what this person has written/said? If the answer is yes there is no problem. I beg the forgiveness of all those whose exercise books I so cruelly technicolo(u)red.
I have to use the word 'person' rather than 'g*y', as I was myself 'educated' at the school where said Mr.F*wk*s was a former pupil, and his name was mentioned only on pain of death (or a long detention).
