You don't get many English Breakfasts in the places I like to trek. The HRP in the Pyrenees for example.

If you carry more, you have to eat more. Remember how much of the Apollo Moon rocket was actually fuel?!

If your saying in a hotel you just buy their pack lunch. But then you are hardly backpacking!

On long trips of a week or two I use Oakcakes and thin slices cut from a block of Parmigiani Reggiano Cheese. It is a hard cheese that does not go off quickly even in fairly hot weather, just keep it deep in your sack. I buy in in 175g chunks from teh supermarket which come ready sealed in plastic packaging.

2 packs of this JUST last me for a two week trek, with a couple of Oatcakes each day.

I also much 2 or 3 cearal type bars though out the day.

I'd prefer rolls with much bigger slices of cheddar but that doesn't work on long trips, unless you can resupply ever couple of days.

Nothing wrong with UK walks and many are excellent no doubt about it. It doesn't have to be far away to be great. Maybe it is just about what you want out of a walk? As we all want something different maybe it makes voting for them a bit academic. As for the stroll for to my local boozer: 8 out of 10 cats say their owners prefered it! So who is to say?
