Interesting views I just took my first trip with my new GPS and map software so can now give a more informed opinion of what it was like. The gps i purchased is a Garmin vista cx which features a 64mb SD card for dowloading map data and a electronic compass and an altimeter, the mapping software i am using with this is Garmin topo UK v2 and memory map os 1:25k (peak district). The route i chose to follow was from Bowden bridge car park along the William Clough path to the pennine way along this to Kinder downfall and on to Kinder low and back along the path through Tunstead Clough farm. Before i set out i programmed the waypoints of the walk into the gps using the memory map software and also printed the map (A4 size) to use with my compass if needed. I got in my car 7:00am and told the gps to take me to the first waypoint (it autonavigates a road route either by fastest time or lowest mileage) this feature of the gps is really amazing as driving solo and reading a map is somewhat hard at the best of times and the gps faithfully told me where and when to turn in plenty of time, I had the detailed road maps of the topo software to thank for this as the basemap of the unit only really deals with major roads. On arrival at the car park i set off on my route which i have to say went really well the gps had a good fix at all times (even in my pocket) and guided me along the path with ease throughout the day i found myself having more time to look around and appreciate the view as my confidence grew the contours of the topo software on the gps seemed quite accurate (i believe OS supplied the data to Garmin) and would be a good indication of danger if you had accidentaly programmed your route over a gully. I did find however that the paths shown on the gps were a little poor and i wouldent advise using them to program a route (ill stick with memory map for this). All in all i had a terrific day out which went without a hitch now i just need a 2gb memory card so i can dowload all of GB to my unit and the country is my oyster as the saying almost goes.
