We're getting one in for a look and what I'm hoping to do is farm it out to someone to put some serious miles on it and see how it holds up. Watch this space.
The problem is the precedent of the destruction and levelling of an ancient byway in an arbitrary and unsympathetic way that's totally out of keeping with its location.
You're right of course that the repair won't last, particularly once motorised traffic gets on it, you only have to look at Chapel Gate which was resurfaced last year and is already falling to bits a few months after it was reopened to 4x4s thanks to a combination of use and water erosion and the Roych Track which is similarly eroding badly after being repaired a few years back, but that's not really the point.
Routes used regularly by 4x4s and trail bikes just seem to be more eroded than others, why would that be?
Are you implying that because you feel that vehicular users are contributing to erosion problems they should be banned? If thats the way the system was worked, none of us would be allowed to go anywhere.
I agree about the waste of money and resources in the article but why must it always end up being another opportunity to discredit responsible vehicular users?
I'm implying that off-road vehicular recreation creates a disproportionate amount of erosion - you don't presumably believe that that's the case?
I accept that there's a legal right for vehicles to use tracks which are technically roads, even if I think the rationalisation behind it is bonkers. But what I don't accept is that it's reasonable for Stanage Causeway to be basically levelled in a way which is completely inappropriate to the surrounding environment.
I've asked Derbyshire County Council for more detailed information on who did actually instigate 'a legal challenge' and more generally which user groups they think will be happy with a totally smooth surface.
There's a bit of 'the track had to be destroyed so it could be preserved going on here'.
The hypocrisy of it all is unbelievable! A footpath/Bridleway is repaired yet the same on a muti user route is seen as "destruction of an ancient route and totally out of keeping with the natural environment". These prejudicial reports keep mentioning the amount of money it cost to the public purse , the negative comments are laughable when you look the amount being spent on Kinder. Should that route be closed to walkers due to the devastating effect they have had on the natural environment and the resulting cost from the public purse? The authorities and the antis are using these high profile routes like porns in a game of chess, they will happily sacrifice them in the short term to achieve there aims.
No, there are plenty of walkers and mountain bikers who are just as annoyed by the thoughtless resurfacing of footpaths and bridleways where it happens.
Routes used regularly by 4x4s and trail bikes just seem to be more eroded than others, why would that be?
Ultimately whatever the rationalisation behind the repairs at Stanage are, whatever the reasoning behind them, they're rubbish and colossal waste of money.
