I have the Gorillapod SLR, which as the name suggests is designed for use with an SLR, up to 800g. It doesn't come with the ball head, I bought it subsequently and it makes it much more useable.
However, for time lapse photography of the night sky I think it wouldn't be very suitable, unless your camera has a fold out LCD screen that you can live view on.
The problem is how can you see through the viewfinder, or see the screen, when the camera won a gorillapod is sat on a rock pointing up at the sky.
I've had some for a couple of years, mainly use them as tent poles for my Tarptent Notch and before that a GoLite ShangriLa. Use them occasionally walking with a heavy pack, work fine for me but I'm only 10st.
