If your feet are tender it could be that your footbeds are wearing thin (I have some Meindl boots where this has happened). Fitting new footbeds to improve comfort runs the risk of reducing the volume of you boot - a solution that I've tried but has not worked.

My son has insulin dependent diabetes so I'm aware of the importance of foot care. I wonder if your feet have changed in which case in addition to seeing the nurse you might conside getting new boots.

Cadair Idris summit last Saturday - hail stones and wind gusting to gale force; fortunately I'd already got my buffalo mittens on. They work when wet and are light to carry. I won't be leaving home without them in future. (I've also regretted not having gloves with me on Kinder Scout in August.)

I don't think Kinder via Sandy Heys merits a place in this list. A nicer way up than the eroded William Clough, and nothing like the height gain in Snowdonia.

When I went up, about 10 days ago, from Ashop Head and down via Red Brook there were just patches of hard snow. I've been away this week and not seen it from afar (I live in New Mills) but I think you'll be ok with just boots.

I recently swopped my plastic survival bag for a two person storm shelter - about £14 from Mountain Warehouse - looks just like the Vango one. Weighs more but looks far more effective and could be used for a feeding stop in areas where there is no wall to shelter behind.

More generally, I suppose what you carry depends on whether you are by nature an optimist or a pessimist. Personally I'm in the latter camp. Used to be responsible for a disaster/business continuity plan - a useful learning experience for the great outdoors.

BTW: You do store valuable/irreplaceable files away from your own PC don't you?
