Ticks are active if temp is 3.5 degrees or above......glad to hear some of your guys using your O'Tom Tick Twister....we are on day 4 of Tick Bite Prevention Week.... We are backing the research being done by the below guys...all the information will help raise awareness about ticks...so if any of you guys live in scotland could you spare a few mins to do the questionaire....
On the subject of ticks and Lyme disease, you may be interested to know that a leading Scottish life sciences company called Xeroshield is currently looking for members of the public who live and/or work in Scotland to take five minutes to fill out a simple online survey as part of a major new study.
Xeroshield is exploring the development of a device to remove ticks from humans and pets, combined with a laboratory service for the detection of Lyme disease in ticks collected and immobilised using this device. The study is designed to assess the potential market for such a product and service. But it is also expected to generate valuable data about general awareness of ticks and Lyme disease in Scotland.
The survey asks a series of very straightforward questions about people’s own experience of ticks and Lyme disease in Scotland. Xeroshield is keen to hear from anyone who spends long periods of time outdoors for work or leisure and is therefore at higher risk of being bitten by ticks.
At a later stage, Xeroshield also plans to carry out more detailed interviews and focus groups and would be particularly interested to hear from anyone willing to participate in these later this year.
If you live and/or work in Scotland, would like to find out more about this project, and to complete the ticks and Lyme disease survey online, please visit: xerolyme.wordpress.com.
I thought it sounded like you had been reading up on it...
If you want some leaflets to give to the guys at the DoE, we can supply you with them, as well as posters. All you need to do is contact our press office and they will send you them down. We have come across a good few guys involved with the DoE, one of them being my practice nurse...there are also power point presentations on our website you can show your guys before they head out. Feel free to contact us if we can help you in any way..and thanks for taking ticks seriously, but also continuing to enjoy the great outdoors...
I don't know if I was at that show...I would have been on crutches, well still on them....but we will be at the Outdoor Show in Edinburgh next month, and were at the one in Glasgow last October..
I can assure from my perspective I didn't think you were belittling Lyme, I did wonder what contact you had had with it though.
Trust me we know how frustrating it is getting people diagnosed....as I said the Bullseye (EM)rash is the only way to show you definitely have Lyme...and only a small percentage of people get that...that doesn't mean you don't have Lyme just because of a rash...it just means it can be harder to prove....I have spoken to more people than I can remember about their Lyme stories and not often has it been an easy path....that is why we offer support as well.....I can see from your friends article that I was giving similar advice etc as she was....One thing I would say is that you can find the younger smaller ticks all year round...each tick can take up to 3 years to complete it's life cycle, so they can be at any stage of it's life at any point in the year. Hope that made sense? As a charity all we want is awareness, and people to be treated early...
my son is 16 next month and we are pretty sure he has Lyme...hopefully we can get him a course of Doxycycline, now this will be damn hard going on him, especially as he is due to sit his Standard Grades next month, and we don't know what will happen, he could have a Herx on an exam day, we don't know, but better he gets treated now.....my hubby was on a mixed course of anti biotics for 6 months...trust me I know how hard it can hit the person....you really need to help your body by taking some supplements etc whilst on the treatment....and must remember to always use sunblock if on Doxy....
I hope you friend is feeling more like her old self again......it is a horrible disease. Maybe you will be see us at shows over the year...and come in and say hi.
We got a fantastic boost today to our Charity, the HPA (Health Protection Agency) have now put us on their website and have also put the link to our TBPW.....it has taken a while but finally we have got there....
Hi Paul, I have tried adding our Tick Bite Prevention Week website link and our normal website..but when I highlight the words then press link nothing happens! I will try again, but if anyone else could manage to link them that would be amazing....
Anti biotics are the treatment used, in various doses and kinds...my hubby was on a six month course of them a few years ago...very hard going...but if caught early it is able to be sorted out.
Sadly there are a lot of people out there who have be misdiagnosed with other conditions, ME, MS, Fibromyalgia etc as many GP's don't even consider Lyme especially if the patient doesn't remember a bite or seeing a tick...that is why awareness is so important....
Ray Mears is our Patron, we tried to get someone who would had dealing with ticks and Lyme.
