Action Sea Kayaking - Round 3

By Susan

Sea Kayaking with Icebergs This is the Sea 3 Sea Kayak Surfing

It's only two years since Cackle TV's Justine Curgenven announced the launch of "the first ever sea kayaking action video" but already 'This Is The Sea 3' is about to hit the shelves. This latest kayaking extravanganza is available from 10th March, and it's as much a riot of playwaves, humungous surf, seals, narrow coves and exposed sea crossings as the previous two.

This Is The Sea

This is the SeaThe idea behind the original film was to overturn the image of sea kayaking as a rather slow, plodding sport. According to Cackle TV, sea paddlers, like their river-running counterparts, and also like skiers and mountain bikers, have plenty to get excited about. We have to say, they've got us convinced. After all, it's difficult not to find sea kayaking even a bit tempting once you've seen footage of an epic journey around the shores of Kamchatka, Russia, taking in six foot surf, close encounters with bears and seals, and the odd run-in with a Russian tank!

The only downside of setting such a high standard with 'This Is The Sea 1' is that the following films had to maintain it. And did they? Well, 'This Is The Sea 2' is big on the crossover between sea kayaking and playboating, which makes for plenty of action, but it all gets a bit samey after a while. 'This is the Sea 3' avoids that pitfall completely though and makes scenic, exciting and - importantly - very varied watching.

This Is The Sea 3 Preview

Pioneering Sea KayakingWhichever side of sea kayaking appeals the most, there's bound to be something in the two hour footage of 'This Is The Sea 3' to suit you. Justine films surfers on South Island, New Zealand; interviews Paul Caffyn, one of the sport's great pioneers, about his ground-breaking expeditions; heads off to circumnavigate the Faroe Islands; and follows a gruelling expedition down the coast of Antarctica, with potentially fatal winds and just a touch of frost among the challenges faced:-)

There are some soul-searching questions to be answered as well. For example, how many ways can you roll your sea kayak? How do you feel about gymnastics in boats? Will you still be speaking to your partner after a few duckings underneath a two man kayak? Is the so-called 'divorce seat' worthy its name? And one last thing: who says it isn't possible to cartwheel a sea kayak?! 'This Is the Sea 3' has it all.

Go to the UK Premier

If any or all of the above sounds good to you, there'll be a UK premier of extracts from 'This is the Sea 3' at the Outdoors Show in Birmingham, later this month. You can catch it at 2.15 on Saturday 17th and 11.15 on Sunday 18th, and Justine Curgenven will be on hand to answer questions. Alternatively, you can buy your copy direct from CackleTV or in a local outdoor shop.

Happy watching. Now, where's my nearest sea kayaking club I wonder...?!
