Our man Gear, Richard Gear, has been hard at work answering your questions and racking his brain over the meaning of boot lasts and RET values.

So far Richard has answered over 500 of your questions and you can find all his past answers together with a shonky search mechanism at the Ask Richard Gear section of the site.

Browse through his past answers or ask a question of your own...

This week Richard helps a man who wears women's boots with his buying queries, looks at 'soda can stoves' and ponders the mysteries of winter overtrousers.

Q: 'Hi There, I am currently using a pair of Salomon Supertrek 6 GTX boots which are about on their last legs. I got these boots cheap in the Lakes approx 3 seasons ago and they fit well straight from the box. They are a womens 7, I am a man with size 7 feet. Of course, that's a bit of a cop out even by my standards. Soda can stoves are mostly home-made ultra-minimalist affairs made from soft drink cans...'

Q: 'In your opinion, what is the best pair of waterproof winter trousers for around £100- £150. Want them to be completely waterproof and NOT Berghaus.'

A: 'The name is Gear, Richard Gear, live from my enormous gear cave. As far as winter overtrousers go, waterproofness shouldn't be a major issue, but breathability and features vary between manufacturers.

'In my experience though, two fabrics are significantly more breathable than anything else on the market...'
