The Friday Matinee

What with the furore over the new Joe Simpson film about the Eiger, we reckoned we'd have a dig through YouTube and see what we could come up with on the big, bad, Swiss mountain front for this week's Friday Matinee.

And what better way can there be to count down to the weekend than doing some virtual mountaineering on a Friday afternoon...

First off, we normally stick to streaming video, but this week we're making a bit of an exception for this extended slideshow of pics from an ascent of the classic Heckmair Route on the North Face, Wow...

And just to show he can do video as well, this is the same fella BASE jumping the North Face from a weird detached mushroom take-off point, trust us, this really is bonkers...

Oooh, after all that excitment, time to take a step back and get a wider view. There are plenty of helicopter shots of the mountain, but this is a more sedate approach, by hot air balloon. Awesome views...

If you've got a slightly bigger screen, like IMAX sized rather than iMac sized, there's an IMAX film called The Alps about John Harlin's climb of the mountain where his father died, here's the trailer...

Oh gawd, this is all so serious... stuff it, here's some light relief in the form of the Bad Mountain Movie Trailer, it's allowed because there's some footage of Clint 'Eiger Sanction' Eastwood in there. Enjoy :-)

That's it for this week, have a good weekend :-)
