Primus Himalaya Multifuel Stove

Primus Himalaya Multifuel

£90

Burns: Virtually anything including gas

Time to boil 1 litre: N/A (gas) N/A (unleaded)

Weight: 450g

Primus have obviously had a good look at the established MSR designs and had a go at improving them. The result is an impressive stove, which burns pretty much everything including gas.

The basics principles are the same as with an XGK, even to the extent of cheekily using MSR fuel bottles, but MSR's plastic pump has been replaced with a tougher, if slightly heavier metal version. The loud, efficient burner is similarly reminiscent of an MSR design, though there's no Shaker Jet, making unclogging blocked jets a slightly more fiddly business - a pricker is supplied though we suggest you take a few spares along as well

.Top: Primus. Below: MSR

The Primus trump card however, is a cunning scam whereby the stove's fuel line can be linked either to the fuel pump and bottle or to a standard, resealable gas canister. The result is a stove that burns both liquid fuel and any gas you can get your hands on albeit noisily. You'll also want to buy the optional wind shield and heat reflector.

Verdict: Cunning expedition stove that gives fantastic versatility. We're reluctant to say it's as good as an XGK without having used it under expedition conditions, but it's building a good reputation and has some nice features. If you've used this stove in anger, please let us know.
