New Boots And Headcases...

Gear news in association with

A bit more pre-show glitz for you and if it looks like we're foisting low kwoll scans of a pre-publicity brochure off on you, there's a reason for that - we are foisting low kwoll scans of a pre-publicity brochure on you...

We've just got some details of the 2001/02 stuff from lakeland climbing guys Lyon Equipment. They bring in Petzl, Julbo, Beal, Ferrino, Ortlieb and Montrail plus others. Some neat new stuff on offer for 2002 including a new brand of rock shoe - Tenaya - made in Spain but endorsed and developed with Yosemite rock master Ron Kauk.

New Helmets From Petzl

Petzl Elios Toop - funky stripes
extra holes and a price tag of £40
The French company are bringing out a pair of new climbing helmets both called 'Elios' and they're due in the shops this November in time for the Scottish winter season. Aimed at mountaineers who need to use a head torch, the main advantage of the Elios Class and Elios Top over previous Petzl helmets seems to be what's described as an 'ergonomic shape', which allows it to sit lower on the head and allow a slimmer cut. Apparently it's the use of an ABS - thermo-formed polycarbonate - shell material that makes this possible.

Good news for climbers who found that the Ecrin and the Roc Ecrin sat a little high on their heads making hoods restrictive or unwearable. The 'Top' is the flashy looking version with more vents and slinky stripes and should retail for around £40, while the 'Class' at £30, comes in plain white and has fewer holes. Both get a thumb-wheel adjustment mechanism. Weight between 310g and 350g depending on size.

Tenaya Rock Boots

Also in the shops for November, just in time for the winter snow and ice, are five new rock shoes from Spanish UK debutants Tenaya. One slipper, three lace-up shoes and a velcro-fastened beastie aimed at beginners through to hot shots. Price between £53 and £60 and developed with Ron Kauk who evidently now spends his spare time signing the all round 'Amigo' shown in the pic.

Sharp Shades

There's a new pair of slinky shades from French brand Julbo, which are due out next month. The £70 'S-Cape' - geddit? - were developed with the help of Chamonix-based guides and feature, wait for it, Julbo's own 'ALTI-chrome x4 photochromic lenses'.

Bronzed French looks are complemented by removable side protection, ergonomically designed flexible arms and a soft, shock-resistant nose rest, just in case someone clips you on the schnozz...

Mobile Phone Case

Like it or not, a lot of mobile phones get out on the hill these days, so the new Ortlieb Boxit 5.0 mobile phone case should plug a gap in the market. At £25 it's not cheap, but then neither are mobiles. It floats on water and there's an 'audio membrane' from WL Gore which means you can use the phone while it's still protected. In tests Lyon say, the case remained watertight for 30 minutes at a depth of one metre. Should be in the shops this month...
