Next Stop Annapurna For Hinkes

By Jon

It's next stop Annapurna this spring for Challenge 8000 mountaineer Alan Hinkes.

Alan has just three of the 14 8,000-metres peaks to go in his quest to become the first Brit to complete the big tick-list and used the weekend's OS Outdoors Show to reveal that 8091-metre high Annapurna is next on the agenda.

The rare sight of Yorkshireman Alan Hinkes signing a cheque, oops, sorry
an autograph at the Outdoors Show

Hinkes took a break from the big peaks last year after a close shave on Kangchenjunga in 2000 and along with Annapurna still has to climb Dhaulagiri and Kangchenjunga. In the past we've ribbed Alan over a series of unfortunate mishaps including the notorious 'chapati seizure' episode, when he sneezed after inhaling flour and put his back out, but he's a tough, resourceful and very determined mountaineer.

We wish him all the best on Annapurna - one of the toughest of the 8000ers by any route - and we'll be keeping you informed of his progress. For some basic information about Alan, see his profile on the Berghaus web site.
