Remember last week's deluge? We thought you might like to see what
a rapid delivery of gallons of water did to the stream that runs
beside the Doctor's Gate bridleway that runs from Glossop up to
Bleaklow. See map.

This is the bridge by the farm at
the bottom of the Doctor's Gate
bridleway
To give you some idea of the amount of water involved, several cars
floated off down Glossop High Street and one was lifted onto a
five-foot wall outside the Queens pub in Old Glossop. Running along
the bridleway next day was almost unbelievable - normally the brook
is around 10 to 15 feet wide, but in places the overflow looked like
an African flood plain with flattened grass, boulders trundled down
by the water and deposits of mud from higher up the river.

And looking up the other way -
those boulders weren't there a week
ago...
Further up we found fish on the path, the beginnings of a bank
collapse and, oh yes, the parapet has been ripped off the bridge at
the bottom of the path.

Slightly wider than
usual...
You can't see it in the pics, but even the day after the main
rains, minor streams which are normally not even noticeable were
swollen to mini white-water torrents.

Further down the river - usually
it's only around 15-foot wide at this
point...

Oi, no fish allowed on the
path...
