A Towel With A Site Of Its Own...

Gear news in association with
eVent Fabrics

Yes, you can tell it's almost Christmas as the 'ideal gift idea' releases start to pour in, and first off the blocks, as the 'must have' Christmas gift is the Nikwax Travel Towel! The first outdoor towel to have a web site all of its very own - unless, of course, you know different.

So what is it? Well, it's erm, a travel towel made from Nikwax fabric Parameta S which is furry on one side and smooth on the other and comes in a mesh sac of its own. Nikwax say that it's half the weight of a cotton towel, less bulky and dries twice as fast.

Not only that, but the Parameta S apparently moves water to the surface of the towel allowing the rapid drying effect and it's also wind resistant, so you can shelter behind it on blowy beaches.

It comes in two sizes, the 'expedition' towel at 100cm x 70cm at £18.99 and the 'beach' 140cm x 80cm at £22.99.

'Keep it in the car for impromptu paddles, to mop up after accidents or as a wrap for extra warmth after a brisk walk.' It says here. What sort of accidents exactly? But hey, let's not go there.

You can find the towel's very own web site here, note that's it's available in 'seasonal red', which should also prove ideal for aspiring matadors... Christmas? Bah, humbug... You can also win a towel a day, which would mean 365 towels a year. Seems like overkill.

But hang on... Also available, in identical sizes, fabric and material, albeit with a different logo, is the Paramo Travel Towel from the clothing division of Nikwax. Of course, it doesn't have its own web site, but then again it's priced at around £12 and £18 for the respective sizes, so you're saving around a fiver. Hmmm... Which would you buy?

Hmmm, the new Nikwax Parameta S towel wouldn't be the same as the established Paramo Parameta S towel, made by the same company but no longer shown on the Paramo website and sold out in most shops - would it?

No, it can't be. The new one is £18.99 or £22.99, depending on size, and the old one was £12.99 or £18.99 full price. (In fact this at £19 was the most expensive Paramo towel I could find on the web.) But perhaps they are different in size? Nope, both of the large sizes are 140x70cm.

I can understand why Nikwax/Paramo might want to rebrand this product under a more familiar and more trusted brand name, but slapping on a 20% price rise at the same time is more than ...
