OUTDOORSmagic member Guy Newbold is after information on a
mountain accident in the Lake District on September 21st, in which
four people died.
A party of climbers were on Scafell Pinnacle when one fell,
dragging the rest to their deaths, or at least that's what appears to
have happened. The catch is that the incident actually took place 100
years ago in Wasdale and the four casualties were - it's thought -
the first to lose their lives rock climbing in the UK. The four are
buried at Wasdale Head and a memorial carved into the rock at the
foot of the route in Lord's Rake.
Guy is planning to commemorate the original, historic accident
later this year with with a service and auction and lectures and live
music. The service will be followed by a walk up to the base of the
climb for a wreath-laying ceremony at the memorial. Any money raised
by the weekend will go to the Wasdale MRT.
He'd also like to invite any living relatives of the four climbers
who he can locate, which is where you come in.
The climbers killed were
• R W Broadrick of WIndermere , a school master and fell
runner.
• Henry Jupp of Croydon.
• Stanley Ridsdale of Kew Gardens, London.
• A E W Garrett of Wallington in Surrey.
If that all sounds very familiar, then e-mail
Guy direct or contact
us and we'll pass on the information.
