Scottish Mountain Rescue teams say that a seven-year freeze on the
amount of governernment money contributed to rescue teams is putting
lives at risk according to a story in yesterday's Scotland on
Sunday.
Each of Scotland's 26 rescue teams currently receives around
£6,000 a year in public funding, but on average spend close to
£25,000 says the story. The shortfall has to be made up with
fund raising activities and the cost of the specialist equipment they
need is rising.
The Mountain Rescue Committee for Scotland (MRCS) is calling for
the public contribution to rescue teams - made through the police -
stressing that in overall terms, the £650,000 is a relatively
modest amount.
