This one made us smile; the Wainwright Society - the group formed
out of adulation for the great man himself - has been indoctrinating
small children into the ways of AW.
If it seems a little harsh persuading small children to tramp the
hills in teh footsteps of the famous guidebook writer, don't worry. The indocrination took the form of a
visit by the Society's secretary Peter Linney to an infants school in
Cumbria on National Books Day earlier this month.
Peter gave a short audio visual presentation about Wainwright's
life and work before the 200-odd kiddies got the chance to take a
look at some of AW's books and maps. Rather charmingly the entire
school was in fancy dress for the day, though rumours that they were
all dressed as pipe-smoking, curmudegeonly fellwalkers are of course
made up...
So, expect to see a new generation of AW fans hitting the fells
any time soon. For more information on the Wainwright Society and the
school visit, see the Society's web
site.
