Firefighters have been battling to put out a mountain blaze in the
Mourne Mountains in County Down.
According to a BBC report around 160 acres were affected by the
fire which was fanned by light winds and, presumably, helped by
recent dry weather. It's the first hill land fire we're aware of this
year and underlines the need for walkers, climbers and other outdoor
users to be careful over the summer months.
Last year's consistently dry conditions led to a spate of moorland
fires in England, Scotland and Wales from April onwards. So far this
year wetter weather has minimised the danger, but with the recent
fine spell, moorland vegetation is drying out again.
