Coming soon from heart rate monitor specialists Polar is a new
range of what they're calling 'outdoor computers' but most of us will
recognise as watches with added bells and whistles.
The
really big departure for the new Polar range compared to existing
outdoors watches is that alongside the usual gubbins like barometers,
electronic compasses and altimeters, the Polar AXNs also incorporate
a heart rate monitor(HRM) function.
All the AXN units feature the HRM, plus altitude, barometric
pressure and normal time features, plus two of the new line-up also
get a built-in electronic compass. We haven't seen them in the flesh
yet, but Polar tells us that they're about the same size as their
conventional heart rate monitors, which will make them a little
larger than the average watch, but smaller than some of the dinner
plate-sized competition...
We reckon they'll be particularly popular with hardcore adventure
racers who want to keep an eye on their heart rate for both events
and during training, but they're also aimed at mountaineers and more
general walkers, trekkers and backpackers.
Judging by the pics they look quite funky too, with a nice,
integrated, rounded design and at least one blazing yellow colour
option if you're that way inclined. Prices range from £175.00
for the basic AXN300 - above - up to £324.99 for the top of the
range, all singing, all dancing AXN700 with titanium case.
The new Polar outdoor computers will be available from August.
