Boot fit could become less dependent on guesswork and trial and
error if a new American technology reaches UK outdoor shops.
US-based Apex Foot Health Industries, who specialise in foot
orthotics and supplies have launched the new iStep F.I.T digital foot
scanner onto the market. It's a device that measures foot length,
width, arch type and pressure points on the customer's foot then
recommends a compatible shoe to suit the individual foot.
"All shoes in the market place are made on different lasts with
different materials. A particular shoe style that feels great on my
feet may actually feel uncomfortable on yours, even if we're the same
size. Optimum foot comfort occurs when you find products that are
designed for your individual needs," said president of Apex, Larry
Schwartz.
Boot fit is particularly crucial for walkers and climbers and
while magazine and web site gear tests and user reviews can help
narrow choices down and experienced boot fitters can often make a
decent guess as to which brands will suit a particular foot,
ultimately it's always been down to trial and error. Technology like
the iStep could take a lot of the guesswork out of fitting and
ultimately make for more comfortable walking. Which would be
nice...
You can find more iStep info at the iStep
web site there's even an online demo.
