We don't normally publicise charity-based trekking holidays on OM,
not because we have any problem with the idea - though we realise
that some OMers do - but simply because there are so many of them
that giving a mention to every one would swamp the site...
Just this once though, we're going to make an exception for what we
reckon is a great idea. World Expeditions is organising an Inca Trail
trek in support of the Inka Porter Project, a charity which is
working to improve pay and conditions for the local Peruvian porters
working on the Inca Trail.
The IPP's latest development is a port-training centre which has
just opened in the small town of Ollantaytambo not far from Machu
Picchu. The training centre is for the porters and muleteers who work
the Inka trail and will offer training in first aid, waste
management, best environmental practice and English lessons. It will
also act as a drop-in centre where the porters will be able to
register any concerns or grievances that they have about their
working conditions.
A sum of $1,000 from each participant will go directly to the IPP,
so you'll be putting money directly into where it's needed and
visiting the area and people who will benefit, rather than trekking
in, say, Mongolia to raise dosh for retired gentlefolk in Surrey.
The trekking itself looks good too, with the route following less
used, alternative Inca paths to Machu Picchu rather than the main
Inca Trail. You can find full
details at the World Expedition web site.

page.
