Yeah, I know, you always thought of soap flakes as Stan's dandruff
and I guess that's something we've had pumped into us by our parents,
the church, Unilever etc.

Sometimes happiness is so simple
and so attainable...

But fear them no more. Why? Remember those expensive wicking base
layers you bought at vast expense a few months back? You know, the
ones that are chemically treated or etched to transport moisture away
from your skin and towards the wide blue yonder? Well guess what, in
some cases, the additives in commercial washing powders and liquids
can actually reduce the efficiency of those garments.
So-called 'wetting agents' help water to penetrate the fibres of
the material, but in the process can spoil the properties that
promote moisture transfer - and let's face it, moisture transfer is
good. Which is where pure, kind, lovely soap flakes come in. Stuff
like the Lux flakes pictured are aimed at delicates and woollens, but
work just as well on baselayers and waterproofs being all soft and
gentle and loving and will help them to work better for longer.
Available pretty much everywhere, not terribly expensive at about
£1.70 a box and they even smell nice into the bargain. So
remember, soap flakes are your friends. But don't eat them unless you really do want to simulate rabies...
