Rab Gets Bivvies, outdoordesigns Gets eVENT

Gear news in association with
eVent Fabrics

Some interesting news from Rab's sister company outdoordesigns which is best known for gloves, hats and, until now, bivvy bags.

Previously the company used Gore-Tex fabrics, but as of this spring - which is now - they've switched to eVENT waterproof and breathable material instead, which brings them into line with Rab.

In cases where the brand previously used Gore Windstopper - mainly in gloves - it's now going to use Polartech's Windbloc fabric. Just to confuse you, the new fabrics won't actually be introduced until September.

One outdoordesigns product that is available right now is a brand new eVENT gaiter called the perma - pictured right. It's a three-layer, front-opening gaiter with a full-length zip and rubberised underfoot, abrasion-resistant strap. The good news is that the perma retails for just £20, which looks pretty attractive to us.

Rab Goes Bivvying

If you're wondering what's happened to the outdoordesigns range of five odd Gore-Tex bivvy bags, look no further than Rab. As part of a rationalisation process, the company's now adding bivvy bags to its established sleeping bag range.

As with the gloves, the bivvies are now made from eVENT fabric. The designs are basically the same as last year's outdoordesigns range, so there's a minimalist single-skin mountaineering tent, a lightweight single-hoop bivvy and five other bivvy bags.

We're not sure whether eVENT will out-breathe Gore's very decent air-permeable bivvy bag fabric, but but the new fabric is slightly lighter leading to a minor weight reduction across the range. Watch out for some new developments next year as well...

Also from Rab right now are four gaiters using eVENT and positioned to correspond to their jackets, so the Latok is a climbing-orientated gaiter, while the Bergen and Vidda are aimed more at walkers.
