in store for the weekend. Just check the links for the relevant

Metcheck
for good overviews of localised areas based on a number
of meteorological models. Loads of quirky options for stuff
like rain forecasts plus offbeat, leftfield weather
generalisations. Get stuck in and have a browse, there's a
lot on this site.
'...with the weekend just around the
corner it's all change, typical hey?... The change will come
in the form of a cold front moving down from the North
during the rest of Friday and during Saturday. Behind this
cold front is markedly cooler air than compared with the
majority of this week.
'Not only will temperatures fall as
the weekend progresses but there will be a lot of cloudy and
wet weather about as well, especially across parts of the
North during Saturday where there will even be a risk of
sleet and snow over highest parts of
Scotland!'
- so it looks like goodbye summer for
now anyway :-(

Mountain
Weather Information
Service has great
downloadable mountain-specific forecasts for
NW, W and SE Highlands,
Cairngorms, Southern Uplands, Peak District and
Lakes in PDF format. Plus a Snowdonia
forecast. The Peak and Snowdonia forecasts are now
restricted to weekend forecasts and go out on Thursday,
Friday and Saturday. Worth wading through the increasingly
cluttered lay-out.
Cooler than recently. Check individual
areas, but you may even find some snow flurries in Scotland
on Saturday with the possibility of bursts of rain, some of
it heavy, further south. Cool on the tops, particularly
north of the border where it may be sub-zero in some areas.
Sunday may get the odd scattered shower, but otherwise looks
decent in a subdued sort of way.
Check individual forecasts for
specific details. Arguably the best mountain-specific
forecast out there by a way.

BBC
Weather Site uses Met
Office data, but more user friendly. Just been revamped for
the summer, weird stuff but easy access to a lot more
information including rain forecasts, cloud, wind,
temperature, visibility etc. Nice. Localised forecasts
accessible from the same page.
Saturday 'Sunny spells for
Scotland, scattered showers developing in the north. Cloudy
with outbreaks of rain for Northern Ireland, Wales, northern
and central England. Largely dry for southern England but
cloud increasing.'
Sunday 'Largely dry with sunny
spells across Scotland and northern England, but a few
showers developing in the far north. Cloudier elsewhere with
rain or heavy showers from time to time.'

Scottish
Avalanche Information Service
- The last daily avalanche forecast for the season has been
and gone. In the winter there are avalanche and climbing
condition reports for five major Scottish climbing areas -
Lochaber, northern and southern Cairngorms, Glencoe and
Creag Meagaidh. But we don't want to think about that for a
while yet ...

mountain web cams we're aware of. If there's one that we've
missed, please drop
us a line and we'll add it to the
page. Good for getting a general idea of what the snow
situation's like, if the sun is shining, whether there's
anywhere to park in Coniston etc. Check the image you're
viewing is up to date as they often seem to go down.
We'll overhaul this page shortly as some of the links
aren't functioning or the cameras have disappeared - nicked?
You have to hope not ;-)

It's not going to rain that much, probably...
Definitely a walk on the cooler side after recent
sunshine.
Verdict If the weathermen are correct - and
when did that last happen? - the weather's changing and we can expect
cooler conditions over the weekend and the possibility of rain and
even some snow flurries north of the border on Saturday. It may even
freeze on some Scottish tops too. Sunday looks the better day in
terms of rain, but overall it looks okay, if not an idyllic early
summer weekend. Our advice is not to forget the waterproofs and
expect it to be cool up top. Have a good one.
Obvious Disclaimer Hey come on, we all
know mountain weather's unpredictable, and while the above forecasts
and links are a guide to what the weather may do, remember that
mountain areas also tend to generate their own conditions,
temperatures are much cooler up top than in the valleys and
conditions can be totally different from down in the valleys.
