It's Richard Gear Tuesday

Gear news in association with
eVent Fabrics

His name is Gear. Richard Gear and after a luxurious week in a spa last week, our Richard has been hard at work again answering your kit questions. You can find all Richard's 500-odd previous answers in our Ask Richard Gear section. Have a look at the most recent answers or use the search facility to see if your question's been asked already, or simply ask Richard a question.

Richard does his best, but sadly he can't answer every question he's asked, so how about checking out the gear section of the OM forum for some commuity wisdom.

Anyway, here are Richard's most recent answers....

Q Do I need to replace my rack of climbing gear which has been stored since the 1990s when I gave up climbing?

A 'In general, climbing kit can suffer degradation through all sorts of factors including corrosion - particularly if you climb on sea cliffs - wear, fatigue due to repetitive loading and exposure to sunlight in the case of slings, quickdraws and ropes and the BMC's advice is that if you think it's time to retire a piece of equipment, then it probably is which is a good idea both for safety and psychological reasons.'

Q Help, I've proofed the liner of my two-ply eVENT jacket by mistake, what's the best way to remove the proofing?

A 'With two-ply fabrics, those which have a waterproof membrane like eVENT laminated to a face fabric and protected by an inner drop liner, usually made from mesh, which isn't part of the main fabric, you should use a spray-on reproofer on the outside of the jacket to avoid proofing the inner.'
