The seemingly inexorable march of the Terra Nova Laser
Competition continues with the Guinness-ratified lightest tent in
the world picking up an industry award for outstanding design
achievement.
The ultra-lightweight twin-skin tent landed a Silver OutDoor
Industry Award for outstanding design achievement and the company
was presented with its trophy at the recent European 'OutDoor 2006'
exhibition in Friedrichshafen.
To put the achievement in perspective, some 153 products were
submitted for judging and there were 34 awards in total including
just one gold award and only six silvers.
Terra Nova was the only British company to win a gold or silver
accolade, so that's pretty good going. The judges commented:
"The first tent presenting fantastic design features that weighs
less than a kilogram. It can be used universally in any setting.
Terrific!"
Weighs Less Than A Bag Of Sugar
The £235 Laser Competition weighs less than a bag of sugar at
860 grammes - well, a one kilo bag of sugar anyway, it weighs more
than a 500 gramme bag, obviously - and sleeps one person comfortably
or two very good friends more intimately.
What marks it out from other lightweight designs is that it uses a
single pole design with an inner and outer tent which typically
creates far less condensation than a singleskin equivalent. The
genius of it is that weight has been kept so low.
Terra Nova, managing director Andy Utting said, 'We are absolutely
delighted to receive this award, giving us European recognition for
this remarkable product. The development of the Laser Competition
tent took three years and it is excellent news that our development
efforts have been recognised.
