Richard Gear's Latest Answers

Gear news in association with
eVent Fabrics

It's Tuesday again and our man Gear, Richard Gear, has been hard at work answering your questions and racking his brain over the meaning of breathability, the tao of lateral rigidity and other pressing matters of gear philosophy.

So far Richard has answered over 500 of your questions and you can find all his past answers together with a shonky search mechanism at the Ask Richard Gear section of the site.

Browse through his past answers or ask a question of your own...

This week Richard embarks on an epic questioning voyage through the vagaries of fleece washing, via multi-functional overtrousers through to anti-balling plates, and who can blame him?

Q: 'OK, I'll admit up front, I'm a tight git. I ride a mountain bike and go walking regularly and hate having to buy similar gear twice. Is there anything I can get in a waterproof overtrouser that's comfy enough to walk in all day, but also tightenable around my calves and ankles and cut to be worn on a bike too?'

A: 'As you've deduced, most waterproof over-trousers have been designed with walking in mind and tend to be a little too billowy for cycling. A secondary problem is that few have any stretch in the knee area, so the constant bending and unbending involved in mountain biking, doesn't really work well with them....'

Q: 'My mother washed all my fleeces with regular washing powder and they became kind of thinner and stiff. Can I save them by washing in Nikwax Techwash or similar or do I have to go straight to the shop?'

A: 'It's far more likely that your dear old mum has ignored the care label and stuck the fleece in on too high a temperature wash. Most fleece washes at 40 or even 30 C and if you exceed that, particuarly if your mama is big into boil washes, then there's a good chance that the fibres have started to melt...'

Q: 'Can you suggest a brand of suitable anti-balling plates to fit my Salewa 12-point crampons?'

A: 'The name is Gear, Richard 'Anti-Bot' Gear. Anti-balling or anti-bot plates are a fantastic way of preventing wet snow from gathering between your crampon points, building up into a huge ball and lifting your points out of the snow so you're effectively walking on huge platform soles with no real grip.. You can combat this in the short term by tapping your boot with your axe, but a plate is a much better option. '
