Blacks Gets eVENT Fabrics

Gear news in association with
eVent Fabrics

Back from the OS Outdoors Show - more about that shortly - but one interesting development that we've not been aware of before, is that Blacks is now producing waterproof jackets using eVENT fabric as part of its own-brand Technicals range.

We've always been impressed with eVENT - in our view it's the most breathable waterproof fabric out there - so it's good to see it potentially getting a wider audience thanks to Blacks' many high street stores.

We don't have full details, but the new jackets, which are in store now, look neat and available in both all-round and lightweight styles. What you won't be getting is cheap eVENT however. The top-end, three-layer Technicals Lethbridge jacket for example, is priced at £199.99. There's also a lightweight eVENT jacket - pictured - in both men's and women's versions.

More details when we have them and maybe even a review.

eVENT Windproof Coming Soon

While we're on the subject, eVENT is also unleashing a windproof fabric later this year and had Rab, Montane and Vau De versions on show on their stand.

Like Gore's Windstopper it promises to be completely windproof, but also thanks to the use of a PTFE membrane, extremely water resistant as well. The membrane itself should keep the water at bay, though in heavy rain, it'll still get in through untaped seams.

This must have the WL Gore marketing boys and girls a little worried. Is the Goretex brand power waning?

OK, so the fact you are on this site probably means you are more interested and knowledgable about outdoors subjects and gear; so you would be more likely to know the advantages of various fabrics over each other, such as event over goretex.

But I would be surprised if the average person buying Blacks gear would be; My guess they'd know the Gore brand and head towards this. Clearly Blacks don't reckon this is the case anymore! And lets face it I doubt own-label stuff is meant to be ground breaking (not that Event is anymore but to the average guy in the street it will still be new). Perhaps Gore have waited too long ...
