Scott To Lecture On Ogre Epic For First Time

By Jon

Some 30 years after the event, Doug Scott is finally going to lecture at Rheged on his infamous epic on the Ogre when he broke both his legs and had to crawl back down the mountain.

Scott along with Chris Bonington had just made the first ascent of a spire of Karakorum grantite called Baintha Brakk - which translates to "The Ogre" - when things went badly wrong.

As he abseiled off the summit block, Scott's feet slid on verglassed rock and he pendulumed violently into a rock wall and broke both his legs. At an altitude of over 23,000 feet and with the light fading, things looked grim.

It was the start of an epic descent - above - during which Bonington also broke several ribs as Scott was forced to crawl down the mountain for eight days assisted by Bonington and the largely unsung Mo Anthoine and Clive Rowland.

Scott has never lectured about the incident before, but he'll be speaking about it on Friday 15 and Saturday 16, June at the National Mountaineering Exhibition housed at the Rheged Centre near Penrith. Start time on both days is 7.30pm.

You can find more information at www.rheged.com and to book tickets call 01768 860090.
