This week Richard answers questions on whether compressing down will damage it, wonders what's causing a crop of heel blisters in some Scarpa Mantas and looks at Gore's footwear guarantee.

Q: I love my Mountain Equipment Wet & Dry Stuffsac (as reviewed on this site): It compresses my down-filled sleeping bag into a small, neat shape, and I'm confident that it's going to stay dry however much it rains. But am I causing permanent damage to my bag by compressing it so much? Thanks! ?

A: The name is Gear, Richard 'Compressed Fillings' Gear. You're right to be concerned, but short-term compression of your down bag shouldn't cause any real issues. One of the strengths of down is its ability to loft effectively after short-term storage.

What you do need to bear in mind is that it's not a good idea to store down in a compressed and damp state, that means you should air and dry your sleeping bag every morning before packing it. If you do pack it away damp, it will affect the down's ability to loft

Q: I have owned a pair of Scarpa Mantas for three years now, and have used then all year round, without trouble. However, this year I have started to have real problems with rubbing and blistering on the inside of both heels. I have tried various sock combinations and dressing etc, but with no effect. Any suggestions?

A: The name is Gear, Richard Gear and I'm concerned about your blisters. Scarpa Mantas are relatively stiff-soled boots and can be unforgiving for year-round use, because the sole unit is quite stiff, any looseness in the uppers may allow your feet to move within the boot generating friction between foot and boot and causing blisters.

Since your boots have been fine for three years, it sounds like something has worn and changed allowing your heels to move slightly inside the boot. There are two explanations that might be worth a look.

Q: What is the guarantee given on a pair of Gore-Tex-lined boots?

A: The name is gear, Richard 'Guaranteed Waterproof Footwear' Gear and I'm guaranteed to keep myself as dry as possible. Gore-Tex footwear and clothing is, in the words of the company 'Guaranteed to keep you dry'.

Specifically Gore says that:

'No liquid from the outside will get to you on the inside. Water from a driving rain you're caught in, a damp bench that you happen to sit on, or wet grass that you kneel in can't penetrate GORE-TEX® fabric. To be totally waterproof, a fabric must be able to withstand water entry in all active conditions.'
