Our man Gear, Richard Gear, has been hard at work answering your questions and pondering the vagaries of waterproof clothing ....

So far Richard has answered over 500 of your questions and you can find all his past answers together with a search mechanism at the Ask Richard Gear section of the site.

Browse through his past answers or ask a question of your own...

This week Richard answers questions about what footwear to use for scrambling on Skye's Cuillin Ridge, suggests ways of modifying a floppy hood with limited adjustment and muses on women's belay jackets and which is the warmest.

Q: I'm gonna be doing some scrambling on Skye in a few weeks time and getting all sorts of advice about the right boots for the job........ any advice and recommendations would be more than welcome. I'm a size 8 1/2 or 9 and definitely needs a ladies boot, mens boots are just too wide?

The idea is that you use thin, breathable clothing while on the move, but when you stop, you simply throw a big, warm, synthetic jacket over the top of whatever else you're wearing....

Q: Hi Richard, I've got a sticky question … is there any glue that can be used safely on breathable, waterproof fabric without damaging it?

A: Gear here, Richard 'Adhesive' Gear, master of, well, sticking fabrics together really. To be honest, I'd be reluctant to use an aftermarket adhesive to try and bond a waterproof jacket.

In an ideal world, I'd suggest using a specialist outdoor clothing repair company to modify the hood, however given that the jacket only retails for around £70, I don't think that's a cost effective option in this case.. ... '
