Running On Ice...

Gear news in association with
eVent Fabrics

Running doesn't have to stop when the going gets icy if you invest in a pair of the weirdly named MR BUGrip running shoes from weirdly-named Swedish company Icebug.

Being based in Sweden. Icebug understands what snow and ice means for runners and has developed its BUGrip system to cope with serious winter conditions.

The BUGrip sole unit incorporates 16 integrated carbide tip studs which on slippery surfaces like ice, snow, mud, wet wood and grass protrude to give maximum grip. However on solid surfaces like concrete or pavement, the studs are pushed inwards allowing the rubber to work conventionally. Finally on mixed surfaces, you get a bit of both with the different areas of the sole adapting to the micro-area beneath them.

The rest of the shoes is more conventional with molded EVA cushioning, a TPU stabliser and an anatomical insole. The version pictured, the MR2 BUGrip Extreme uses seriously tough upper materials for durability. There's are women's versions too.

More details of the Icebug range at www.icebug.se. For UK stockists contact Ark Consultants by e-mail.

Metal studs are quite common on orienteering shoes: scrambling over fallen trees etc. in the wet just doesn't really work all the time with plain rubber cleats...

Inov8 include a metal stud sole on one of their models (Mudclaw 340 O +) and Silva make some.  A good orienteering supplier should be able to give you a choice.

Pete.
