The Chinese have succeeded in their mission of carrying the
Olympic torch to the summit of Everest and don't we know it...
The specially-designed, altitude-friendly torch, a sort of
subsidiary twin of the main torch, was lit on the summit of the
world's highest mountain on live television today, Thursday.
The final torch bearer was a Tibetan woman, Cering Wangmo who was
part of a team comprising both ethnic Tibetans and Han Chinese.
Whatever you think of China's human rights record, its policy towards
Tibet and the security surrounding the ascent of Everest, it's still
a pretty extraordinary achievement.
