German pack specialist Deuter is claiming to be the first
manufacturer to offer 'specific women's backpacks for every
single model across the full range of their hiking, trekking and
biking collections', with a range of packs designed for women, by
women.
The women's versions of Deuter packs are easy to spot thanks to
the addition of the letters 'SL' - short for 'Slim Line' it says here
- to the basic pack name. The entire product development team for the
women's range is composed of women meaning, sys Deuter, that they
know 'exactly what women want'.
So what do women want? It's not just a slightly modded men's pack
in a pretty colour. The SL packs, like the Guide SL pictured, have a
lower anchor point for the shoulder straps to cope with women's
generally shorter back lengths.

Shoulder straps are narrower, shorter and comfortably padded and
the chest strap sits higher than on the men's version to avoid. The
hip around the hips is tailored to suit a a women's body with
narrower hip fins set at a more acute upwards angle.
Finally, what with women supposedly being rather more discerning on the
aesthetic front, the team has also focussed on looks and colours, so
you can carry one without courting a visit from the fashion
police...
