This week Richard answers questions differences between
Camelbak reservoirs, ponders whether using a tarp in the UK
is worth the hassle and helps a gilet buyer in a quandary to
make his mind up...

Q: Camelbak - would you explain the differences
between the UnBottle and the Omega reservoir? I have a
reservoir which I use in an ordinary rucksack - OK but I
have not yet found a way of keeping upright in the sack.
Want to buy one as a present? Is the UnBottle more
versatile?
A: Gear here, Richard 'Hydration' Gear, expert at
on the move drinking, not quite so good at on the move
thinking, but there you go...
The Omega is basically just Camelbak's reservoir complete
with tube and bite valve, it's a decent enough bladder with
a wide, screw-on opening making it easy to access and
reasonably straightforward to clean. The bite valve,
particularly when fitted with the 90-degree elbow complete

Q: Hey there Richard! Just wondering is using a tarp
in the UK worth the effort or is a tent just the easier way
to go? Any good purchases to be made from Canadian or U.S

can be supported by poles, walking poles or handy trees,
boulders or whatever. They vary in size from those designed
to give minimal protection for the upper half of your body
through to more palatial offerings that are ...'

Q: Hi Richard, I'd like to replace my now well worn
out gilet but I can't decide between three I've found. Could
you cast your expert eye over them and help with my choice.
Ideally I'll be using it during the spring as temps drop
when sunsets and during the autumn/winter as a mid layer (I
run hot). TNF Apex Elixir Vest TNF Windwall 1 Vest Haglofs
Dual Vest. Thanks for helping..
A: Gear here, Richard 'Gilet' Gear and hey, for
once, that actually sounds like it might be a real name,
gawd help us all. I have to confess that I'm not a massive
gilet fan because leaving your arms exposed loses a lot of
heat, though they do suit some people when moving fast.
Which of the three vests you list is the best choice for
you depends pretty much on what you're looking for, just
wind and a little shower protection or some added insulation
as well.
The TNF Windwall 1 Vest is basically a sleeveless
windproof fleece ..
