A climber survived a 40-foot plunge into the sea at the weekend
thanks to the actions of his companion who managed to keep his head
above water despite a rising tide.
According to news reports, the pair - both experienced climbers -
were abseiling down a sea cliff near Staffin in North Skye when 'his
foot caught in a safety rope and he slipped'. Apparently the unnamed climber initially
fell onto an area of shoreline, but the incoming tide quickly
threatened his safety.
Fortunately his climbing partner was able to keep his head above
water and she eventually pulled him onto rocks, anchored the pair and
waited for a rescue helicopter after calling from help using a mobile
phone.
The male climber was treated in hospital for a badly broken ankle,
while his companion was apparently unhurt.
