GPS Compatible Routes and Route Sharing

Garmin header
Introduction
One of the best features of owning a GPS is the ability to swap detailed route data with other users. Although individual maps may differ from one device to another the core data about locations will remain the same. Each manufacturer has its own dedicated format for data, with easy transfer of data from one device to another through a PC (or Apple in some cases). This means that Garmin users, for example, can exchange data in a ready to use format between them.

Route compatibility
Although there is no industry standard format for GPS data, there is a single format that gives a degree of compatibility between devices. Applications like Anquet and Memory Map can record much more than basic location and distance information, but unfortunately much of this data cannot be transferred except between users of the same software as each application uses its own proprietary file type. Most devices however, including mobile phone and PDA based GPS, can import and export files in .gpx format. The .gpx format is a base level data set that carries information on waypoints and distances but may not always carry the full detailed data available on dedicated applications.

Route sharing websites
As well as transferring data between users directly, via SD card or PC link, there are also a number of data sharing sites with publicly accessible route and waypoint data. This can range from lists of waypoints for specific locations such as Wainwrights or Munros, to complex multi-day routes. OutdoorsMagics Maps And Routes System (MARS) offers free downloadable routes in a choice of GPS formats and the a preview of the route on a 1:50,000 OS map powered by Anquet. Once downloaded, these routes can be transferred directly to a GPS receiver without needing to manually enter a series of waypoints and instructions. Combining this information with a digital mapping application routes and waypoints can also be associated with photographs, descriptions and websites to provide much more detailed information than is available using traditional map and compass.
