Wales Gains New MountainSnowdonian hill reclassified as walkers find extra two-and-a-half feet in height...
| | | Three Welsh walkers have succeeded in upgrading a Snowdonian 'hill' to
mountain status by proving that contrary to previous
measurements, it exceeds the magic 2000-foot mark.
Mynydd
Graig Goch, which lies at the western end of the Nantlle ridge, was
officially 1,998 feet high, but the three keen walkers were convinced
that it was actually higher and, after using precision measuring
equipment from a Swiss company, found that it topped the 2000-foot
level by a massive six inches...
Apparently the original height measurements by the Ordnance Survey are
only accurate to plus or minus three metres, so more accurate modern
measurements could alter the status of a number of UK hills. The OS
seems set to recognise the height change, with their digital data to be
updated 'over the next few weeks' and paper maps revised once the new
editions appear.
It may or may not matter to you, but technically there are now 190
mountains in Wales. You can read the full story at www.independent.co.uk and news.bbc.co.uk
