Satmap
has released a
software
update for its Active 10 GPS unit, the latest in a
continuining upgrade process based on feedback from Satmap users,
including OM, and aimed both at making the unit more intuitve in use
and optimising it for European mapping which Satmap is
launching later this year.
Previous
software upgrades have significantly improved the Active 10 over its
original state, in particular power handling is much better with the
result that batteries last far longer. We'd still suggest the
rechargeable Lithium Polymer power pack as an near essential upgrade
however.
The latest update - version 1.3 - is free to all Satmap owners and can
be downloaded direct from the Satmap site. Two main changes are that
the OSGB grid references are now in ten-figure format and European
Datum is now included to support international mapping.

There have also been some neat little changes to the user interface,
most noticeably the little blue dot that shows your position on the
screen has now grown an outer circle and a little arrow showing the
direction of travel, which is a big improvement. And Satmap
has tackled our personal bug bear, the tendency for the unit to turn
itself off with an inadvertent press of the power button - it now opens
a 'yes or no' confirmation screen, which should spell the end of
interrupted tracks...
Still on the backburner however are the online route-planning system
and support for Apple Macintosh users, which has been promised since
the launch of the unit but so far hasn't materialised.
