Mountain running hit the headlines again at the weekend when rescue
teams
airlifted
eight competitors in the
Welsh 1,000m Peaks Race to hospital in the face of bad
conditions.
According to the BBC, the rescues took place in the Carneddau area with
both mountain rescue teams and the RAF involved as 245 competitors
battled with appalling June weather - rain was falling as snow high up and high winds made for freezing temperatures. This time though, media reports
lacked the hysterical undertones of the OMM coverage earlier this year,
suggesting that the mainstream papers and broadcasters might have
learned from their mistakes.
As well as the eight who were lifted to hospital mostly suffering from
hypothermia in the winty conditions, another 25 competitors were
reportedly rescued from the hills and the 22-mile race, which
had been due to finish on the summit of Snowdon was abandoned.
