New Bike Trail At Nevis Range

By Jon

Newly opened mountain biking Red Route uses gondola but is aimed at cross country riders.

If you're off to the Fort William area this summer and ride mountain bikes as well as walk and climb, you're in luck - Nevis Range has opened the new Nevis Red Route, a mountain biking trail that shares the World Cup downhill mountain gondola but is suitable for cross country bikers rather than full on downhillers.

The new trail is more than 5.5km long and descends from 543 metres to 100 metres above sea level. It's a singletrack trail and graded ‘red’ under the Forestry Commissions grading structure, though that means there are some 'black' or more difficult sections.

The route includes metre-wide boardwalk, natural rock sections and gravel. As with the World Cup Downhill course, the Red Route is accessed via the UK's only mountain gondola complete with specially-adapted bike carriers.

Along with the renowned Witch's Trail, it means it's well worth packing your mountain bike if you're heading up to Lochaber this summer or autumn. But don't take our word for it, just check out the head cam footage from the new trail above.
