Fitness Tips From The Butcher's Dog!

Butcher's Dog! New weekly outdoor fitness tips from the canine on creatine. Cold wet nose and glossy coat guaranteed.

Simulate and Stimulate

Stuck in the big grey city with only a gym for company but want to train for the mountains? It's not the end of the world, but to make the gym work for you, think about the action you're trying to simulate. For most walkers it's hill climbing, which makes subtly different demands from walking on the flat.

Stair climbing type machines are an excellent simulation using many of the same muscles. In tests against running, they've been shown to have equivalent fitness benefits but with less jarring on joints. Don't cheat though, keep your torso upright and aim for medium stride-length rather than pathetic butt- jiggling micro steps.

Remember too that you're preparing for steady ascents rather than lung-burning sprints, so train in the same way, but vary the pace to raise the interest level a little (not hard as gyms are so boring). Now get on with it.

Woof!
