Mountain Equipment Mountain Jacket

Pushed for time? Click here

Price: £89

Weight: 610g

Features: Taslan reinforced shoulders and elbows, handwarmer pockets, large zipped chest pockets, hood, thumb loops on cuff, adjustable hem cord.

Comments: Another classic that from all the rave reviews, you'd expect to be near perfect, but it ain't. First the good points, the Ultrafleece material, also known as K2 Karisma, use by ME is excellent for general mountain use. It's lighter than say, Polartec 200 but makes up for lower ultimate insulation values with extremely high wind resistance. It's not windproof, but I've used Ultrafleece on its own on days when I'd have wanted a shell over normal fleece. The new DXB water-repellent treatment was, in our tests, of limited effectiveness and also needs to be reapplied occasionally.

Cut is generally pretty good and mobility is excellent, but the hood has no means of adjustment so tends to hang loose and we were surprised to find that the upper pockets are too small for either an OS map or a climbing guidebook.

Verdict: Super-versatile fabric and generally good design is a few tweaks short of the full picnic. We're not saying it's not a good jacket, it is, just that it's not quite as good as everyone else suggests.

Performance: 3.5

Value: 3

Direct me firmly to Mountain Equipment's lovely web site

Pushed for time: Good but not quite perfect. Tough, wind-resistant Ultrafleece is excellent for UK and alpine use, but pockets are too small and hood could use adjustment option.
